5 ways to wear a saree

Published: Jun 27, 2010 by geetanjali Filed under: Fashion Tips

A sari is an unstitched, six yard piece of fabric Indian women wear with pride. It has to be draped in a certain manner to give a fully dressed effect. While there is a traditional method of wearing a saree, it is worn in different ways in different Indian states.

It is not possible to wear a sari without a petticoat and blouse. So before you wear a saree, you have to get a petticoat and blouse of the same, or nearing color of the saree. The petticoat runs from the waist to the floor and is tied tightly at the waist using a drawstring. Once the saree is worn, no part of the petticoat is visible outside the saree.

The blouse has to be tight fitting and end below the bust. It is usually stitched using some of the saree material to ensure it compliments the saree. Blouses can be short sleeved or sleeveless with your choice of neckline.

Traditional method

To traditionally wear a saree, you have to start tucking its plain end into the petticoat, starting at the navel. This is to be continued till you make a complete turn from right to left wherein you have to adjust the lower saree end to the required height. It’s better to wear a saree while wearing your footwear to ensure you drape it to the right length.

Next, you have to measure the pallu (The part of the sari that is draped over the blouse and shoulder is called the pallu.). You do this by holding the saree’s top edge, bringing it around your hips to the front, over your left shoulder wherein you measure the pallu length.

The pallu should hang down to the knees and is pinned to your blouse to prevent it from falling off. You next have to make and hold together 7 to 10 pleats, so that they fall straight and even when tucked turned towards the left, into the waist, slightly to the left of the navel.

Gujerati and Maharashtra method

This is the traditional and most common method of wearing a sari. However different regions of India have their individual methods of draping a saree. In the Gujerati way, instead of opening to the left, the pleats open to the right. The pallu is brought over the right shoulder and spread across the chest while its left edge is tucked in the petticoat at the back.

In the Maharashtra method, the saree should be eight meters long. A portion is drawn between the legs, and tucked behind at the waist. The other part is draped as pallu over the chest. This saree style gives more freedom of movement.

Tamil and Bengali method

Tamils also drape eight meter sarees around the waist and position the pleats along the left leg. The remainder of the saree is taken over the shoulder, wrapped again around the waist and is tucked to the left side.

Bengalis wear their sarees without pleats. The saree is just wrapped around the waist, brought to the right side and the pallu is thrown over the left shoulder. The pallu is brought under the right arm and again, cast over the left shoulder.

You can try all these methods of wearing a saree to find out which method you are most comfortable in, and which suits you the best.
